Saturday in Louisville
I got to tell you…I had one hell of a Saturday. First of all, I successfully conned someone into taking me with them to Lakeside, which is like the magic kingdom of swimming pools. It only took me 6 years, but I finally managed to park a float in it.
The bulk of my Saturday was spent on music. In 3’s…
Joe Manning is a Louisville singer-songwriter, member of Kings Daughters & Sons and a current favorite of mine. All his performance at the 930 Listening Room needed was a camp fire and a bottle to pass around. And I say that with enthusiasm…so many Saturdays are wasted on loud, boisterous, obnoxious banter. Joe’s performance was intimate, but unguarded. Perhaps there is pain buried beneath the lyrics, but I wasn’t privy to it–his music is joyful and warm.
I missed the first 1/2 of Gold Jacket Club’s because I had to book it over to the Zoo & wrap up an evening with Don McLean (American Pie!!!) & the Louisville Orchestra. All I can say is bad taste is timeless. Upon return to the 930, I walked into Gold Jacket Club. Prior to the show I had a brief run-down on the band from a co-worker, but I wasn’t really sure what to expect from them musically. Although the history of the band at first seems complex (X went to school with Y, A was in a band with B & C, and T spent some time in Chicago playing with U then they all decided to form a gigantic noise rock band and put on a show once or twice every 11 years…), but at the core is a group of friends who like to get together and occasionally jam. And it helps if your definition of jam is rock the fuck out as loud as you can in the center of an otherwise dark & empty room with a dozen amps, instruments, speakers, a candelabra & a keyboard. Truly amazing and unique.
